Bangladesh to victory over Sri Lanka in 100th Test

Chasing 191 to win, Tamim Iqbal struck a fine 82 before skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (22 not out) carried Bangladesh over the finishing line on a dramatic final day at the P Sara Oval in Colombo on Sunday.

It sealed the Tigers’ first win over the Lankan lions in the format as they squared the two-match series 1-1. The fact that it comes on their century of Tests added to the weight of the triumph.

Bangladesh became the fourth team to win their 100th Test matches after Australia, the West Indies and Pakistan.

Nineteen girls killed in fire at abused children's shelter in Guatemala

At least 19 girls were killed in a fire on Wednesday in a government-run home for abused teens, Guatemalan police said, with local media reporting that dozens of residents had escaped the overcrowded home following a melee overnight.

A crowd of relatives, many of them wailing with grief, gathered outside the Virgen de Asuncion home for children up to 18 years old, in the municipality of San Jose Pinula, some 25 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of the capital Guatemala City.

Nery Ramos, the head of Guatemala's national police, said at the scene that 19 people, all girls, were confirmed dead.

"This is a painful situation," he said, adding that the fire was started by a group of young people at the centre.

Plagued by Latin America's highest rates of child malnutrition and street gangs like the Mara Salvatrucha that often prey on minors, Guatemala has long been a traumatic place to grow up. Conditions in public institutions are often dismal with widespread overcrowding.

Burnt bodies partially covered in blankets were strewn across the floor of a blackened room in the home, pictures posted to Twitter by the firefighters showed.

On Tuesday night, riot police were sent in to quell unrest over the crowded living conditions at the home during which some 60 residents escaped, images on Guatemalan television news showed.

Local media said more than 500 children lived there, despite its capacity to hold only 400.

Pablo Castillo, a spokesman for Guatemalan police, told Reuters that 38 children had been transferred to local hospitals with burns, some of them severe.

Outside the home on Wednesday, Andrea Palomo told reporters in tears that she had brought her 15-year-old son to the home to discipline him. But he told her he was mistreated and complained that gang members there tattooed the children, she said.

"We have been given no information since last night," Palomo said outside the home, which takes in children who have been abandoned as well as victims of abuse and trafficking.

The home is run by the Ministry for Social Welfare and the attorney general for human rights decides whether children are placed in the home or not.

Real Madrid thrash Eibar without Bale and Ronaldo

Real Madrid romped to a 4-1 win at tiny Eibar on Saturday, provisionally returning to the top of La Liga, despite the absence of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo for Zinedine Zidane's side.

Karim Benzema was the focal point in Real's attack without the suspended Bale and injured Ronaldo and fired the visiting side ahead in the 14th minute, following up his own shot on the rebound, before stretching their advantage in the 25th.

James Rodriguez had provided the cross for Benzema's second goal and the Frenchman returned the favour for his Colombian team mate to net his first league goal since September in the 29th minute.

Marco Asensio hit the fourth on the hour mark with a rebound after James had struck the post.

Ruben Pena bundled in a consolation goal for Eibar in the 72nd minute but Real still recorded their biggest win since beating Real Sociedad 3-0 in January.

The win will lift Real's confidence having dropped five points in their previous three games. Victory sends them top of the standings on 59 points although Barcelona, on 57, can return to the summit when they host Celta Vigo later on Saturday.

Magnificent Messi stars as Barca rout Celta to stay top

Lionel Messi was in inspired form as champions Barcelona hammered Celta Vigo 5-0 on Saturday, recording a fourth straight league victory which keeps them top of La Liga.

Messi opened the scoring in the 24th minute after a stunning solo run and then laid on a pass for Neymar to double the lead in the 40th with an irresistible chip.

Ivan Rakitic and Samuel Umtiti added to the scoring in the second half, the latter netting for the first time for the club, as Barca produced one of their best performances of the season in their first game since Luis Enrique revealed he would not be continuing as coach after the summer.

Messi then capped his virtuoso display with a darting run forward into the box past two defenders and a classy low finish, rounding off a rampant Barca display reminiscent of their 6-1 thrashing of Celta last year.

Barca top the La Liga standings on 60 points, one ahead of Real Madrid, who eased to a 4-1 win at Eibar earlier on Saturday, although Zinedine Zidane's side have a game in hand.

Sevilla, third on 55 points, visit Alaves on Monday.

Ramos rescue act ends brave Napoli's comeback bid

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos performed another rescue act to wreck Napoli's brave comeback attempt and take the Champions League title-holders into the quarter-finals on Tuesday after they had taken a first-half battering.

Napoli, trailing 3-1 from the first leg of the round of 16 tie, looked more than capable of overturning the deficit as they dominated the first half and took the lead through Dries Mertens.
But with Real wobbling, Ramos popped up to head an equaliser early in the second half and he produced another header six minutes later which deflected off Mertens and into the net.
Substitute Alvaro Morata added another in stoppage time against deflated opponents to give Real a 3-1 win that sent them into their seventh successive Champions League quarter-final by a deceptive 6-2 aggregate score.
"We did really well for the first 45 minutes but the two goals early in the second half took the wind out of our sails," said Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri.
"Because of that, we weren't able to maintain the same intensity in the second half."

Backed by a fervent crowd, Napoli made a fast and furious start and peppered the Real goal with shots in the opening 10 minutes.
They repeatedly carved open Real's defence with quick, clever angled passing and superb running off the ball.
One such move produced their opening goal when inspirational captain Marek Hamsik laid a perfectly-weighted first-time pass into the path of Mertens who lost his marker and placed his shot wide of Keylor Navas.
Real, fielding the same line-up that started last year's final which they won on penalties against Atletico Madrid, were being totally outplayed, although they nearly snatched an equaliser against the run of play.
Karim Benzema's pass sent Cristiano Ronaldo sprinting between the Napoli defenders and past Pepe Reina but the Portuguese forward fired his shot against the foot of the post.
Napoli also hit the woodwork with a shot on the turn by Mertens after Allan's pass was deflected into his path.

The hosts failed to begin the second half with the same intensity, however, and quickly paid the price after Hamsik uncharacteristically gave the ball away in midfield.

The move ended with Real winning a corner which Toni Kroos delivered perfectly for Ramos to rise above the Napoli defence and head the ball in to silence the crowd in the 51st minute.
Six minutes later, Ramos struck again from another corner, although this time the ball took a deflection of Mertens and UEFA awarded an own goal against the Belgian.
Faced with a hopeless task, Napoli completely lost their momentum and Real coasted through the rest of the game, Morata snapping up a rebound for the third goal.

Ramos produces yet another timely intervention for Real

Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Deportivo Coruna are all likely to sympathise with Napoli after the Serie A side became the latest to be foiled by Sergio Ramos on Tuesday.

The intimidating Real Madrid captain celebrated his 100th Champions League match with another rescue act to drag the title-holders out of a hole against Napoli and set up what turned out to be a comfortable 6-2 aggregate win.

"We suffered, but we got through it together," Ramos told reporters. "If we knew the formula then everything would be very easy.

"Sometimes things don’t go as you have worked on them. It’s a game to reflect on, especially in the first period. Despite that, I’m happy to go through but we need to reflect on the errors we made."

Napoli, trailing 3-1 from the first leg of the round of 16 tie, were in the mood for an upset as they dominated the first half and took the lead through Dries Mertens.

But with Real wobbling, Ramos popped up to head an equaliser early in the second half and he produced another header six minutes later which deflected off Mertens and into the net.

A late Alvaro Morata strike sealed a 3-1 victory for the Spanish side but Ramos's heroics are a familiar story for Real fans who have become used to their captain's timely interventions.

The most dramatic came in the 2014 Champions League final when he headed an equaliser in the third minute of stoppage time against Atletico Madrid and Real went on to win 4-1 in extra-time.

Ramos, who gave Real the lead against the same opponents in last year's final, repeated the trick in December when a towering 90th-minute header salvaged a 1-1 draw at arch-rivals Barcelona.

Deportivo Coruna became the next victims when Ramos scored another last-gasp goal to give Real a 3-2 comeback win.

Bayern Munich have also been on the receiving end, with Ramos scoring twice in four minutes as Real won 4-1 at the usually impregnable Allianz Arena in the 2013-14 semi-final.

In all, the 30-year-old has scored 66 goals in his 12 seasons at Real.

His only disappointment on Tuesday was when UEFA awarded his second header as an own goal by Mertens.

"You're joking," he said. "They've taken away my brace.

Suarez convinced Barca can overcome PSG at home despite harrowing first leg

Barca scraped a 2-1 win over struggling Leganes in their first game after their harrowing defeat in Paris, but they head into Wednesday's return leg on a high after hammering Sporting Gijon 6-1 and Celta Vigo 5-0 in their last two outings.

"A lot of time has passed since then, but the hardest thing was the first few days," Suarez told a news conference on Tuesday, recalling the loss that has left Barca on their earliest exit from the Champions League competition in a decade.

"That defeat hurt us a lot, but a few days later we were able to lift ourselves up with a change in attitude and by scoring goals."

Barca overcame a 2-0 defeat to AC Milan in a last 16 first leg in 2013 to win 4-0 and knocked Gothenburg out of the 1986 European Cup after losing a semi-final first leg 3-0, although no side has ever clawed back a four-goal deficit in the Champions League.

"Nothing is impossible in football and if any team is capable of scoring four goals it's Barca, but we'll do it our way. We need to remember the game lasts 94-95 minutes and we need to be patient and not get desperate," added Suarez.

"We can't go crazy, we want to turn the situation around and go down in history more than anyone else, but we need to play with a sense of calm.

Suarez produced one of his best displays in a Barcelona shirt against PSG, scoring twice in a 3-1 win at the Parc des Princes in a 2015 quarter-final first leg, sliding the ball through the legs of a hapless David Luiz for each goal.

After the shock of the defeat three weeks ago, the Uruguayan said the team is prepared to produce a history defining performance.

"The great thing about football is you can lift yourself up immediately, and we're feeling confident and lively, and with the support of our fans we believe we can rise to this great challenge," he added.

"If we pull it off it will be the greatest game of my career. It's one of the most important games I'll play and we have to convince ourselves we can do it. We're going to fight until the end.

Debate rages about Ronaldo, Benzema, Bale despite Real win

Real's expensively assembled attacking trio, nicknamed the 'BBC', made just seven passes between themselves during the 3-1 come-from-behind win in Tuesday's last 16 second leg, with Ronaldo and Bale not passing to each other once.

Despite a 3-1 lead from the first leg, Real struggled to cope with an onslaught of pressure from the Serie A side in a frenzied San Paolo stadium and trailed at halftime to Dries Mertens' strike after 24 minutes.

The 11-time European champions were stronger after the break and drew level with a header from a corner by inspirational captain Sergio Ramos six minutes into the second half.

An own goal by Mertens six minutes later, triggered by another Ramos header, put Real 2-1 up.

Bale, who has recently returned from a three-month layoff with an ankle injury, was replaced by Lucas Vazquez 11 minutes later and Benzema came in the 77th for Alvaro Morata, who got their third in added time, sealing a 6-2 aggregate win.

Real's ragged performance despite the result contrasted with a fluid display in the 4-1 La Liga win at Eibar on Saturday, when Benzema started alongside Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez in the absence of the injured Ronaldo and suspended Bale.

Vazquez and Asensio's work rate provided relief for Real's midfield and full backs, who are often overworked when Bale and Ronaldo are both on the pitch.

Season-long debate

Real have conceded seven goals and taken five points in their three league games since Bale returned to the lineup.

The season-long debate in the Spanish media about whether Benzema, Bale and Ronaldo can be accommodated in the same team resurfaced before the return leg at Napoli, a poll on the website of the daily AS (As.com) showing the real fans were overwhelmingly against the trio starting together in Naples.

Benzema reacted angrily to criticism of the attacking trio after the game, telling reporters: "They always focus on us three but we don't just score goals, we work very hard for the team, but every time there's a bad game they blame us."

Zidane also leapt to the defence of his forwards.

"I don't agree that Bale didn't help out the defence or that Cristiano didn't help out on the wing, everyone is at fault for us not starting well," he said.

Pressed on Real's problems in the first half, the coach gave a curt response, saying: "We won 3-1 and that's that.
